Everyday at my daughters school during the morning announcements they talk about 2 things. Now like most schools they do the pledge and have a moment of silence and all that normal stuff. Then every single day the principal talks about two things.

She wants them to be. . . .

Good Citizens // you know the drill, treat others well and be respectful to you teachers. Being a good citizen also means trying your very best at everything you do.

Good Readers // Every morning she celebrates those who have been reading and every morning she reinforces the need to be diligent reader.

Now like all of us know in leadership. Saying it can become the easy part, but making sure to reinforce is and pack down into the DNA of the organization can be really really tough!

Today I got to go to the award ceremonies for my daughters at their school.

They gave out awards for 2 things. Can you guess what they were? If you guessed good citizen and readers then you would be absolutely correct. Now don’t get me wrong. They gave out honor roll and all that good stuff. But the focus was on being a good citizen and being a good reader.

They shared with the parents and the students that the students had managed to read 20,000 books this year. This is a small school so this is a huge accomplishment. Every chance the administration got they celebrated this with us.

Do you reinforce what you say you values are?

Here are 3 questions you can ask yourself as a barometer to whether you are reinforcing what you say.

Am I sick of saying it yet? Chances are if you aren’t sick of saying it yet then the people around you haven’t quite heard it yet. In my experience when I get really tired of it, the audience is just now starting to hear it.

Do you have regular and consistent systems to celebrate it? Whatever it is you want to see happen, you have to be sure to celebrate it when it happens. You have to put in place a steady and consistent system for making sure that you know when the good happens.

How many people around you are bought in? Want to know if you are making progress? Look at the people around you and see if they have really caught the vision for it. If you want your values to come through the multiply the amount of people saying them and believing in them.

What would you add to this list?
