Drive Conference Breakout A / Leveraging the Next Generation with clay Scroggins
12:00 PM
This was a great session! I was actually thinking
it was on a different topic all together. But I have to admit it was exactly
what I needed and I loved it.
The thrust of the talk was discussing the need for
us to Leverage the next generation of leaders to carry the torch on and do more
than we ever dreamed possible. Investing in the leaders that are behind you or
that you are leading is a way to put you signature and imprint on the future. Clay
did a fantastic job.
Who is the
Next Generation
- Whatever generation is
behind you. that is the people that you lead and pour into!!
Why we must
leverage the next Generation
- God commands it
-
Jesus and Paul modeled it
-
You are the benefactor of someone leveraged you
-
Leveraging the next generation creates a river culture rather than a pond
culture
Four Things
the Next Generation needs to become leaders
- They need opportunities
-
Share problems, not just solutions
-
Trust young leaders to solve the problems
-
We need to show them a canvas and allow them to paint whatever they want.
- They need to be given
responsibility
-
they need ownership over the problem
-
trust young leaders to solve the problems
- They
need to be given authority
-
Delegating the responsibility is easy but delegating authority is mandatory
-
They need to receive the credit
-
Leaders need to feel the weight of their decisions as well as the rewards of
their success
-
Public praise is fuel for difficult days
Warnings
about the Short Term
- The
failure rate is high
-
It feels like more work
-
You are going to sacrifice excellence
How do we
leverage the next generation?
-Identify:
Chose where to invest
-
The key is to be a calculated risk taker
-
find influential people to find future leaders
-
Coach: train leaders to lead
-
Teach them how to lead by showing them how to lead
-
Give them opportunities and then give them the resources they need.
-
Consult: keep short feedback loops with leaders
-
Ensure that feedback is robust two way
-
You have to be available without micromanaging
My Take Away
Success is not filling up a room or an event if it all depends on you, but success
is leveraging the next generation so that if you leave or move on the
organization it still flourishes and moves forward. Leveraging the next
generation gives you the ability to empower others to discover how God want to
use THEM in His Story.
