I have a running joke with some of the leaders I work with. I learned it from one of the best leaders and businessmen I know. Sometimes I walk into a room and I just say please and thank you! I do that because I know that when I get focused I forget to say things like please and thank you! Sometimes I forget “can you?” or “do you mind”

For the longest time I acted as though this was ok. Like this was an acceptable response to people that are serving along side of me. And then something happened..

Sometimes the most profound things in my life come from sarcasm. I was walking on the back wall at Remix our Student Ministry at oneChurch.tv and there was some kids sitting on the back wall and blocking a pathway. I was doing something else and walking toward someone who needed me and I very quickly just said “get them in a seat!” Now to me… I was just asking someone to do something. But it didn’t come out that way. I didn’t even hardly made eye contact. I just spouted off an order and there it was.

Now luckily for me my leader is a great guy and gave me a hard time about it later. But it was a really good reminder for me about making sure that I am intentional to say please and thank you. But it was more than that. I serve with an amazing team of leaders. And its my job to make sure that they know how much I value them and how thankful I am for their contribution.

Sometimes we use personality, busyness, and focus as reasons to not take time to make sure our volunteers feel valued and know that we appreciate them enough to look them in the eye and ask them to help us.

Make sure you take the time to

Make Eye Contact
Ask Nicely
Be intentional
Say Please
Say Thank You
Pour Value into your Leaders
