Have you ever notice the huge process between acknowledging something about you that needs to change and making that application to your life? It is so tough. A lot of times we stop at the acknowledgment of it all and never going any further. Its like in school when something clicked, you probably got excited for the moment but that didn’t change the fact that you were still going to have to do all those math problems. There is a tough process in the middle of acknowledging something that needs to change and doing what is necessary to making that change.
Here are 5 things I have learned about doing this.

Find accountability – this is huge. You need someone in your life to help you process through what you are experiencing. You need someone who loves you enough and is invested enough in you to walk with you through it.

Figure out what part of your life it has the greatest effect on – Why it is there is a huge thing. Is it a circumstance you haven’t fully come to understand and deal with or is it something in your character? That is a hard thing to figure out but if you don’t it will become about managing behavior and not heart change. Which will lead no where fast.

Look into your heart – find out what is going on in there. Don’t become focused on managing behavior to control how others view you. Worry about the heart and the changes that need to happen so that you can truly have victory.

Remove the stumbling block – if you  with drinking it is not a good idea to have that around you all the time. You may be able to come back to it and view it correctly if you work through it. I know a guy who was an alcoholic and can now enjoy a beer. He stopped trying to make an equation out of his life and allowed God to change his heart, so that he can view it in the correct way. Having a healthy view of the circumstances you are in can change a lot.

It cannot be about anyone else – Don’t try to “fix” yourself to meet someone else’s approval. Just be willing to be molded by God and how He views you. We all have things we need to work on and improve upon, but it cannot be for someone else’s acceptance. We want to be more because we are ACCEPTED, not to earn it.
