Per the normal arrangement I have with Catalyst every year, they blew my mind with the opening. It was absolutely fantastic. The ending to the 1st was perfect. Andy Stanley gave an incredible talk on the “appetite” that every leader has. He really challenged us to reframe our “appetites” so that we would not give in to the now and sacrifice our futures to satisfy what our appetites want right now.
Here are some of the some of the highlights from his Talk!!

We all have Appetites! We usually associate appetites with Food and Eating, but Andy talks about the different appetites that leaders have and how they drive us. Here are the 8 appetites he says leaders have.

            - progress
            - responsibility (wanting and desiring more inside the organization)
            - Respect
            - Win (the desire to Win)
            - Growth
            - Fame
            - Achievement
            - To be envied

The one consistent thing between all these appetites is that they always want more! They will never be fully satisfied. They can be put off and there can be temporary ways to make us forget about it, but our appetites will never completely be satisfied.

Here are the 3 things Andy shared with us about Appetites!

God Created them and Sin distorted them – They were made to be pure and to give us drive and motivation and let us know that our body is in need of something, sin and our needs to be satisfied right now.

Appetites are Never fully satisfied – We live with the view that there is something out there that will eventually and finally fully satisfy out appetites. We chase after this because we want to be fully and completely satisfied and we make “now” decisions based on this thought!

Your appetites always whisper now and never Later – our appetites tell us not only do we have to have this but we need to have it right now. A lot of time we choose something right now that will hurt and damage our future. It’s amazing how its always now in our minds because we need to Reframe our appetite and what the long term effect may be.

Andy used the story of Jacob and Esau to tie this in. Esau gave up his entire future and life for a bowl of stew. He needed something now and it changed his entire life and how the future for a bowl of stew.

We have to learn to reframe and refrain from the thing that will cost us in the long run.

Andy left us with one compelling question!!

What is our bowl of Stew? What is our thing we have to have now that would possibly cost our children and us their future??
