Leadership
No But. . . .'s
11:07 AM
How often do you throw an idea out there and hear the words
“yeah but . . . . “ You fill in the rest. It can be so discouraging to sit in a
room full of leaders and have ideas to put out on the table and all you hear is
“but. . . . “ It can be so discouraging to the creativity in the room and the
flow of more good thoughts.
I have to take a minute and brag on my team at oneChurch.tv.
We have a family ministry Leadership team that consists of the directors or key
leaders from each area under Family Ministry! I love their hearts when there
are new ideas being thrown out and processed through. I very rarely hear but. .
. I often hear and. . . I have a group of passionate people who
love their area and see the overall big picture of the organization. Their goal
is not to point out reasons why it cannot work out so they can feel valued, but
to figure out how to make it happen and make it better for overall good of the
organization. I have the flip side of a problem usually. I have to stop all the
ands before we end up spending the entire budget. Encourage dreaming on your
team. And’s do that but. . . .’s usually don’t.
One of my favorite people in the world to be around is a guy
who says and. . . . constantly. He is one of the best thinkers I know and he
never discourages thoughts, but is always trying to make them better and figure
out how we can make them happen. oneChurch.tv encourages this as a whole and
that filters down to everyone.
There are times when there has to be a but. Sometimes an
idea just cannot happen, but if we move out of the way we may be shocked how
often those problems we thought were so big could be overcome.
Be someone who keeps the dialogue going about an idea. Even
if it isn’t your favorite idea you have ever heard. You owe it to your team to
see where it goes. As a leader if you are on of the main people saying “but. .
. .” you will quickly discourage your team from engaging with you! Encourage
you team to keep thinking and building on their ideas. Every good idea started
somewhere. Let more you welcome ideas the more freedom will be felt to give
them.
Do you encourage your team to use and. . . . ?
